Zig-Zag Test

Used a lot in more advanced sports coaching, coaches use the Zig-Zag Test to assess the development of their athletes foot speed and agility.

What's The Point?

Foot speed and agility are essential in many sports, from football to rugby, tennis to basketball. It enables athletes to move quickly, change direction, and avoid opponents.

The Zig-Zag Test is an excellent way to measure this crucial sports skill.

What Do You Need?

  • An assistant
     
  • A non-slip surface
     
  • 5 cones
     
  • A stopwatch

How Do You Do The Test?

Mark out the with four cones placed on the corners of a rectangle 10 by 16 feet, the fifth cone in the centre:

  • Follow the grey route shown on the diagram
     
  • Complete one circuit of the course, starting and finishing at the Start/Finish cone
     
  • The assistant records the time to the nearest 0.5 seconds
     
  • Rest five minutes
     
  • Repeat the test
     
  • Record the best time

What Results Will I Get?

There are no normative scores for this test results are significant when compared the previous scores thus taking the test on a regular basis will allow you to track the progress and effectiveness of your training.

What's Being Measured Again?

This is a good way to measure an athlete's foot speed and agility.
