Hypertension exercise programming
Programme design for hypertension will be based mainly on light intensity cardio but could consider some strength work. Lets explore.
Considerations.
Designing a hypertension exercise programming, there are certain key factors that have to be considered.
Strength training.
Perhaps the most important are the considerations in regard to strength training. Strength training can be part of hypertension exercise programming, but it is not generally recommended as the primary form of exercise for those with hypertension. It can however, be included as part of a circuit training workout.
Cardio workouts.
What is generally recommended is moderate intensity aerobic workouts. These have been shown to reduce blood pressure, while increasing overall health and fitness.
Exercise parameters are usually:
A variety of moderate aerobic exercise this includes walking, swimming, biking, running, rowing, circuit training, etc.
Sessions should include a warm-up (15 minutes), an aerobic conditioning phase of 20-30 minutes, and a 10-minute cool down.
These programs should be conducted at low to moderate intensity.
Two to three sessions per week of aerobic training yield significant gains in overall fitness.
In summary.
It is recommended that training should be monitored, using either a pulse monitor, or the Borg scale of perceived exertion. Once patients are trained to use the Borg scale, it has been found to relate closely to other objective measures of exercise intensity.
Performed regularly, exercise of this type can lower blood pressure and increase overall health and fitness.
