Additional Heart Conditions
There are a wide variety of heart conditions, the most common ones include:
- Cardiovascular Disease: Also known 'heart and circulatory disease', this term includes all diseases of the heart and circulation, including coronary heart disease (angina and heart attack), and stroke.
- Angina: This usually occurs as a result of coronary heart disease, and is characterised by an uncomfortable feeling or pain in the chest.
- Heart Attack: A heart attack occurs when one of the coronary arteries becomes blocked. The heart muscle is thus starved of blood and oxygen, and can suffer permanent damage.
- Heart Failure: This describes the proccess by which the heart becomes less efficient at pumping blood around the body.
- Cardiomyopathy: A condition in which the heart muscle becomes abnormally enlarged, thickened or stiff.
- Congenital Heart Disease: A heart abnormality present from birth.
- Heart Rhythms: Problems with heart rhythms occur when there is a disturbance in the electrical activity of the heart.
