Asthma exercise programming

Understanding asthma and its limitation can help you put together an effective training programme.

Need for exercise programming.

How does asthma exercise programming differ from activities done by those without asthma? Although many people who suffer from asthma limit their activities, the truth is that people with asthma can participate in the same range of activities as those without asthma.

How asthma can make you feel towards exercise.

Unfortunately, many people with asthma limit themselves, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of deconditioning as a result of lack of exercise. Coaches who design asthma exercise programming thus need to take account of the various steps that can be taken to prevent asthma symptoms from occurring during workouts.

If coaches have a plan to manage asthma on the playing field or in the gym, serious health problems can be avoided, and asthmatics can be encouraged to engage in physical activities.

This requires training, so that coaches can understand a range of issues such as:

  • How to recognize an asthma attack
  • What happens when symptoms occur?
  • The role environment plays

Other factors that can help include using appropriate warm-up and cool-down exercises to help prevent asthma symptoms from occurring.

In summary.

The research is incontrovertible asthmatics who exercise are better able to manage their symptoms than those who dont thus the more that can be done to encourage people to exercise regularly, the better.
