Asthma

There are millions of asthma sufferers worldwide. Asthma is a chronic, inflammatory lung disease characterized by recurrent breathing problems. When an attack strikes, the airways become constricted and inflamed, and may become lined with excessive amounts of mucus.

Symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, and for some sufferers, tightness or sharp chest pains.

There are a number of known triggers including air pollution, infection, allergies, emotional stress, cold air, or certain medications (including beta-blockers) although this is far from an exhaustive list as there are many other factors that may also be triggers.

Low intensity aerobic work can help sufferers of asthma, so if you have previously suffered from exercise-induced asthma, it may be worth talking to a personal trainer who has experience working with clients with breathing difficulties. They will be able to help you design an appropriate exercise program.
