Hexagon Agility Test

Another variation on the agility test, this one is great for a range of sports, with regular testing you can chart your improvement very easily.

What Is The Point?

Agility is a skill that is often undervalued by coaches and athletes it is the ability to change direction at speed, and is vital for sports as diverse as tennis and rugby.

Using an assessment technique such as the Hexagon agility test will help you to measure this key skill.

What Do You Need?

  • A 66cm-sided hexagon marked out on the floor
  • A stopwatch
  • An assistant

How do you do the test?

  • Warm up

  • Stand in the middle of the hexagon (see illustration below), facing line A

  • Remain facing line A throughout the test

  • When the assistant says Go!, jump with both feet over line B and back to the middle, then over line C and back to the middle, then line D and so on

  • When you jump over line A and back to the middle you have finished one circuit

  • If you jump the wrong way or land on a line the test is restarted.

  • Complete three circuits

  • The timing begins when the command to start is given, and ends when you finish the third circuit.

  • Rest for five minutes then repeat the test

  • On completion of the second test, add the two scores and determine an average time.

The Results You'll Get

By repeating the test at regular intervals, you can measure the development of your agility.

If you wish to compare your score with others, the following chart shows normative data for 16 to 19 year olds:

Gender Excellent Above Average Average Below Average Poor
Male <11.2 secs 11.2 - 13.3 secs 13.4 - 15.5 secs 15.6 - 17.8 secs >17.8 secs
Female <12.2 secs 12.2 - 15.3 secs 15.4 - 18.5 secs 18.6 - 21.8 secs >21.8 secs
