Benefits of pre natal training.

The positive effects of prenatal exercise training have been clearly established by research.

Firstly there are the effects that regular workouts confer on the general population these include the protective effect on diseases such as coronary heart disease, osteoporosis and hypertension, as well as a reduced risk of colon cancer and breast cancer.

Current Research.

Research suggests that prenatal exercise training can have the following effects on pregnant women:

  • Reduced fatigue, varicose veins and swelling of extremities
  • Less insomnia, stress, anxiety and depression
  • Shorter labour and decreased delivery complications
  • Because your body will be stronger and more flexible, you will have fewer problems with your joints, tendons, intestines, stomach and circulation
  • Less problems with constipation, a commonly reported problem during pregnancy
  • Better ability to control weight gain
  • Improved glycaemic control (for those with gestational diabetes mellitus) indeed, regular workouts may play a role in prevention of developing gestational diabetes mellitus
     

Women who workout during pregnancy also find it easier to continue exercising postpartum.

Downsides of not training.

In addition, those who choose not to workout during pregnancy have to look at the negative consequences of this choice. These include:
 

  • Loss of muscular and cardiovascular fitness
  • Excessive maternal weight gain
  • Increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus and pre-eclampsia
  • Increased incidence of physical complaints such as lower back pain
