I’m James, a strength and calisthenics coach based in SW18, helping people get back into exercise after time off, whether that’s from injury, work taking over, or simply never having trained before.
I found fitness at university, and it certainly wasn’t love at first session, it took time to become a real, consistent part of my life. After uni I trained as a secondary school music teacher, then went on to serve as an army musician. Through all of that, training stayed with me, and it changed everything: confidence, structure, a sense of capability I hadn’t really had before.
I specialise in strength training and calisthenics, building real, functional strength using bodyweight movement, tailored to people coming back from a break or starting from scratch. Strength training matters more as we start to age. Building and maintaining strength protects mobility, independence, and resilience for decades to come, it’s one of the most valuable things you can invest in as we age. My focus is always on what your body can do: get stronger, move better, build real capability. The way you look tends to follow as a welcome side effect.
My approach is built on patience, kindness and not pressure. There's no judgement for where you’re starting from, no unrealistic expectations, just steady, supportive progress at a pace that works for you.

I coach at a well equipped gym in Wimbledon Park that has access to a wide variety of weights, machines and cardio equipment. I also coach at client's homes using using minimal equipment, since most of my training is calisthenics and bodyweight based, meaning you don't need a fully fitted home gym to get a great session in.
