Course Introduction
Being active has a major role in preventing and managing chronic illness and conditions such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease. Exercise can help people cope with these conditions and enjoy a higher quality of life. This is your chance to team up with family doctors and make a difference to those enduring chronic illnesses.
This qualification is also mandatory for all Level 4 qualifications and for Level 3 Special Populations Diploma.
Pre-requisities / Entry Requirements
Ideally, you’ll have a recognised Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification. If not, you can enrol but will have to take the anatomy and physiology unit, which costs another £100.

Support
A dedicated Learner Support Tutor will mentor and support you throughout. He or she will help you at every turn, answer your questions or just provide focus and motivation when you need it. You can have a support call by appointment, or you can just get in touch when you need to. It’s your call. Over the phone or on email, your personal tutor will help ensure you’re prepared for your training days. They’ll also give you feedback on worksheets and assessments to ensure you have no knowledge gaps. If you need any other help at all, please just ask.
Other Information
The anatomy and physiology assessment (if you do not hold a level 2 qualification) must take place on a separate date to the exercise referral course dates, as we can’t fit it in during the programme. You’ll have to ask our careers team about exam dates and venues.

• Exercise Referral - principles
• The law
• Designing programmes for a variety of medical issues, including:
Asthma, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Obesity, Hypertension, Depression, stress and anxiety, Arthritis, Joint replacement surgery, High cholesterol/high blood pressure.

Course Options
How is it assessed?
Before you start your course, you’ll do a variety of multiple-choice assessments. They cover every condition in the content section above. The idea is to get you ready for your attendance dates. They’re not part of your final grade.
During the course, you’ll also do these assessments:
1. Worksheet on medications and activity guidelines
2. Case study on progressive exercise programme
3. VIVA/interview case study
4. Practical teaching
What Qualification Will I Get?
The Level 3 Exercise Referral Instructor course scores 20 REPs CPD points – the most for any one programme. Completion also entitles you to take the Level 4 Exercise Specialist qualification. This covers Managing Lower Back Pain and/or Obesity and Diabetes. This qualification is also worth 30 learning credits in the Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF).
